Fr John
This weekend we are sad to say farewell to Fr John. Fr John has made a huge contribution to the life of the community both as Pastor and administrator. Over his nine years in Dalkey, he has earned the respect, deep affection and gratitude of parishioners and our prayers and best wishes go with him as he leaves this weekend.

Welcome to Fr Devitt
We heartily welcome Fr Paddy Devitt this weekend, his first in our parish. Fr Paddy will celebrate Mass at 8.45am and 11.15 am on Sunday. Next weekend will see him celebrate at the other three Mass times. So over the coming weeks we hope he’ll have had a chance to meet you all.
Annual Mass of Thanksgiving 28th Sept
During the past few years, it has been the custom of the Parish of the Assumption to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving to God for the large number of people who have offered their services to the life of the Parish and the wider community. Late September was selected for this event because it recalls the date of the Dedication of the Parish church. This year is special for a number of reasons. It is an opportunity to wish Fr John a fond farewell as he leaves the parish. It is also an opportunity to meet with and welcome Fr Paddy Devitt as he joins us from Mater Dei Institute. We are also celebrating the beatification of Cardinal Newman on Sept 19th by Pope Benedict XVI. This year Mass will be celebrated at 7.30 on Tuesday 28 September 2010, followed by a cup of tea afterwards in the Heritage Centre. Everyone is welcome and those who cannot be at the Mass are invited to join us for tea afterwards, which will be served at around 8.15pm. Fr John will be present and we are planning to make a presentation to him, on behalf of the Parish.
Church Gate collection
This weekend’s collection is for Fighting Blindness which funds world-leading research into cures and treatments for blindness. They also provide a unique professional counselingservice for people with visual impairments and their families. Your support is appreciated.
Church Gate collection next weekend
Next weekend’s collection will be for Haven, an Irish charity working solely in Haiti. Haven, founded by Dalkey residents Carmel and Leslie Buckley, is working to build sustainable communities, through the provision of housing and emergency relief, and by implementing community development programmes in Haiti. In Oct/Nov this year, 500 Irish volunteers will travel to Haiti for ‘’Build It Week’’. Your support is very much appreciated and will be used to buy building materials.

To mark the Beatification of Cardinal Newman by Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to Britain, an event to celebrate Newman’s association with Dalkey is planned for Saturday 18th September. The event, entitled A Talk and Walk with Newman, will begin in the Church at 2.30pm with a talk given jointly by Niall Tierney and Dick Dunne, members of the UCD Newman Society, and will be followed by a guided historical walk to No. 2 Mount Salus on Knocknacree Road (Guide courtesy of the Dalkey Heritage Centre). The booklet, Newman in Dalkey , written by Fr Des Forristal, has been reprinted and will be available in the Church and the Parish office, priced at €2.
